Day 14: A picture of you and your family

Here's a picture of all of us, but it's pretty old. I think I was a senior in high school in this picture.
This was the same trip but it shows our personalities better (except Dad's not in it)
Last but not least, is my favorite picture of me and my parents. This was taken after my graduation from high school so it's pretty old too but we all look about the same.

Day 13: 5 Favorite books

This is gonna be tough. For the purpose of this I will make a top 5 of Kurt's books and top 5 of all others

Kurt Vonnegut-
God Bless You, Dr. Kevorkian-
This isn't actually a book, rather the script for a radio show Kurt used to have. The basic premise is that this reporter goes and sees Dr. Kevorkian every so often and is killed, then brought to life again. While he is dead he interviews those he meets on the other side. This book is SO hilarious and is typical Vonnegut in every way. He interviews people as famous as Hitler and as unknown as an average joe. Super quick funny read. I think it took me 45 min and I read really slowly.

Slapstick-
This book is so interesting. Very hard to explain but it's amazing. Very different view of the future of this nation. There are basically two story lines in here. One follows the President of the United States in a semi-post apocalyptic-society and the other is the story of how he grew up. Both stories make you think and will continue to catch you off guard.

Cat's Cradle-
This follows a man that tries to document what happened the day the atomic bombs were dropped on Japan in the life of the man responsible for creating them. While this may be the plot line, my favorite aspect is the fake religion Kurt creates called Bokononism. For those of you who have watched LOST, I'm certain they ripped the premise of the show off of this book. I'm not angry though, I love it!

Mother Night-
This book looks into identity. Basically you are whoever you pretend to be. This is about an American spy who is being tried in the Nuremberg Trials because he can not prove he is a spy. The reader must decide if they think he's a spy or not and the twist ending makes it perfection.

Timequake-
This book itself isn't that spectacular but I love the basic premise which is that at some point in time, there was a glitch in time and everyone was sent back 10 years. They couldn't change anything they had done, they could only sit there and redo everything they had already done for the last 10 years. The book starts at the instant the 'timequake' ends. In essence it is the end of the 10 year 'replay' and explores what happens when people have to turn off their auto pilot and make their own choices again after 10 years of having no control.

All Others-
Velvet Elvis by Rob Bell-
An interesting look at todays Christianity through the eyes of a man who focuses very much on the Jewish roots of our religion. Can't explain it much better than that but it's very thought provoking

Animal Farm by George Orwell-
Basically how I feel about government and one of the only political books I've ever enjoyed.
"All animals are created equal; some animals are just more equal than others"

Irresistible Revolution by Shane Claiborne-
I heard this guy talk about his book 'Jesus for President' and I thought he had to be nuts. He was this dude in homemade clothes and gnarly dreads. He looked like he should have been pan handling outside as opposed to giving a talk to a few hundred people. Zack encouraged me to read this book and basically it has revolutionized my life and may do the same to you. Go into it open-mindedly though. If you're a republican... don't read it, you'll just get pissed off.

Burned by Ellen Hopkins-
This is a phenomenal book and I loved reading it. Another good twist ending and still thought provoking which is always good. It follows the story of a Morman girl who is constantly abused by her alcoholic father. She goes to her aunt's house to find herself and become a woman. She falls in love and it's just a nice fluffy coming of age story.

The shack by William P. Young
Yet again, a good thought provoking book about a man whose daughter is abducted and killed. In a search to discover how to grieve for her, he goes to this abandoned shack and is met by God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit  who show him what love, loss and grief mean from an eternal perspective. Very very intriguing.

Day 12: A poem to someone I love

I don't like writing poetry on the fly therefore this will be a haiku:
Lacrosse, college, fun
Eternity can't break bonds
On and off field

Day 11: Bucket List

This is going to be super random and probably fairly incomplete but here it goes:
1: Visit all the continents (I only need Antarctica and Australia)
2: Graduate college
3: Visit all the countries in the EU (9/27 done)
4: Get married
5: Have/adopt a kid
6: Become a godparent
7: Do the Peace Corps
8: Start a non-profit
9: Return to Amsterdam
10: Smoke weed with my mom- In A-dam of course!
11: Go back to NOLA with the Roots team
12: Save someone's life spontaneously using my EMT skills
13: Be an aunt
14: See Keaton play college sports (football, lax, or wrestling)
15: Return to coaching
16: Own my own apartment and live alone
17: See New Zealand with my dad for at least a month
18: Never reach a million dollars in net worth
19: Finish Kurt Vonnegut's books
20: Get at least 5 more tattoos (all with deep meaning and significant thought)
21: Get a tattoo with my dad
22: Complete a masters degree
23: See ASC LAX win a game
24: See ASC LAX have a winning season
25: See ASC LAX ranked

Day 10: Songs you listen to when you're happy, sad, bored, hyped, mad

These are sort of off the top of my head so, I'm sure they're not entirely accurate. But accuracy is most perfectly achieved through chaos.

Happy:
Tipsy in the Sun by White Panda
This song just makes you happy. How can you NOT be happy listening to this. It makes me feel like freshly cut grass and sun tans mash that up with some beach lax and you've got this song.

Sad:
Miserable at Best by Mayday Parade
I'm not the type to try and avoid the feelings I'm trying to fix via music. This song just kinda feels like sad. It's either this song or Self Conclusion by The Spill Canvas. It all kinda makes you wanna put on an old boyfriend's hoodie, eat peanut butter (or nutella) and cry to The Notebook.

Bored:
Anything Dan Le Sac vs. Scroobius Pip
Dan Le Sac vs. Scroobius Pip may be a mouthful of an artist name but it's fitting. Scroobius Pip is an AMAZING poet. Not rapper, poet. Also, Dan Le Sac has some pretty sick beats to background Pip's words. This song sort of exemplifies how I feel about life and social work in general. Overall excellent song.

Hyped (I don't know what this means so.... We'll go with pumped up):
No Ceilings by Lil' Wayne
This will always be on my pre-game warmup list. It's the attitude I need to take when I hit the field. Confidence may not entirely change whether you have skills or not, but I think it have give you the extra boost to get there.

Mad:
Body Bag by Hit the Lights
Pretty self-explanatory. You piss me off, I'd like to think you pay (except I'm pretty good at forgiving and turning the other leaf)

Day 9: Something you're proud of in the past few days

Wow. There is so much. Well a bunch of my friends either just graduated college or successfully finished their first year of college. Plus a ton of kids I've know forever are graduating and moving on to college and all that jazz. That's something to be proud of for sure.

But more importantly, me and 15 other girls just finished what will go down in history as the first ever ASC WLAX season ever. We may have lost each and every game, but there were large individual successes within each game played. Not only did we make a lot of firsts, but we also got to go through some super exciting experiences. We got to play Rollins College who finished the season ranked 7th in the nation and 4th in our region. This may not seem like something to be stoked about, but this team is only 4 years old. It was beyond inspiring to have Coach Lamb stand there and tell us that we would become that team. He is completely dedicated to this team no matter how long it takes. I can't wait to see the team go there and know I helped lay the foundation (no matter how rocky).

In related news, Lewis-Palmer's team (which now goes by Palmer Ridge) is in the state playoffs! My first season playing lacrosse was during their second season as a team. The following year, I was captain of the first team to have a winning season in LP WLAX history. This gives me hope for ASC WLAX's future and I can't wait until I can cheer my alma mater team to victory!

Day 8: short term goals for this month and why

Gee, what a strange prompt...
I guess play hard in my game on Saturday against Mesa. It's our season closer and our last home game. I'm going to be playing on broken ribs so we'll see how that goes and I haven't practiced for a few weeks so that will also be interesting.
I'm also hoping to successfully apply to a few more jobs and get at least one. If I don't get one I'm kinda screwed but oh well, life happens.
I'm also thinking I'm going to have to move in with my grandmother this summer as opposed to living in the apartments like I was planning to.
I guess the only other thing would be to complete my finals well and get back into the weight room/practicing so that I can merk next year on the field.

Day 7: a picture of someone/something that has had the biggest impact on you

This is a super old photo but I thought it was perfect. This is both a someone and a something that have a massive impact on my life. This is my youth group leader from high school, Zack Weingartner. I've know him since I was a freshman and he is super important to me. This picture was taken on the way to New Orleans in  Jan. of my senior year. Zack was responsible for showing me what true love in the name of Christ looks like and he definitely has helped instill my value of the underdog. Many of my career choices and moral decision have been made because of things Zack taught me, showed me or put me in the situation to learn. New Orleans has shaped a lot of who I am and daily influences decision I make. If it weren't for Zack or New Orleans (which wouldn't have happened without Zack) my life would probably be drastically different.

I think every decision we make influences our lives for ever, but I think it's rare that you can specifically pick a certain event or moment that significantly changed the course of your destiny. I'm not talking about knowing that a butterfly in Brazil can cause a hurricane in India. I'm talking about knowing that an earthquake in Japan causes a tsunami in China. A very large event that causes a very large reaction. I think being able to have those moments and experiences makes you very special and I think they are few and far between. I feel incredibly blessed to be able to point to at least a handful of events and people that have cause tsunami's per say in my life. Zack and NOLA have hands down been the catalysts for the most drastic changes in my life's trajectory.

Day 6: Favorite superhero and why

My favorite super hero would probably be Captain Planet. Not because I'm super green or into saving the planet or anything, but because it's really the only superhero show I grew up watching. I wasn't allowed to watch Batman or Spiderman or other shows like that because my mom thought they had too much violence in them. Captain Planet wasn't like that. Have you ever met a tree hugging violent person? Nope... Didn't think so.

I always wanted one of those cool rings and remember LOVING the show when I was a kid. I kinda want to go watch an old episode to see if it really was any good.

5.01.2011

Day 5: A picture of somewhere you've been

This is the center of downtown New Orleans and the French Quarter. I spend every  summer here helping the homeless and have even taken a nap on a bench in park right there next to that statue. Also, I ran into the family from "Little People, Big World" in the huge Catholic Church in the background that looks like it's from Disneyland. I can't wait to go back and I miss it so much.

4.29.2011

Day 4: Habit you wish you didn't have

I wish I didn't bite my nails and I wish I didn't crack my knuckles. These are pretty lame habits but they are what they are.

They don't really pose any issues but I'm afraid I'm gonna be 87 and not have use of my hands and all I'll be able to think was "Dammit, you should've stopped cracking your knuckles when you were 10. Now you can't even hold a spoon and your poor grandkids have to feed you your pudding and apple sauce because your children never show up at meal times here at the nursing home."

That just sounds like a miserable life.

Oops Missed a day: Day 3

Day 3: Picture of you as a child

This is me as a baby. I'm 11 months old and fat as hell. I don't really think this looks like me now but oh well. I look a lot like my grandmother actually in this picture. Needless to say I'm super cute as a kid and still am but in a totally different way. This picture makes me wanna snuggle up with myself plus I look super fun and hilarious (which I'm sure I was).

4.27.2011

Day 2: The meaning of your blog title

The meaning of the title of my blog is very simple...
My name is MacKenzie which obviously shortens to Mack.
This blog documents my adventures.
Thusly, MackVentures seems to fit.

4.26.2011

Start of a habit...

David Crowder in "Praise Habit" said that it takes 21 days to form a habit. He proved this by making the sunshine salute. This was basically a ridiculous gesture he did every time some one said hello to him. Basically in the end, he proved it took about 21 days to form a habit and at the end of him 30 days with the sunshine salute he couldn't help himself from doing it even when he no longer wanted to. Long story short, I need to make this a habit one way or another. Therefore, I'll be doing the 30 days of blogging challenge and hopefully after those 30 days I won't be able to stop blogging since it'll be so well embedded in my routine.

So here goes day 1:
Recent Picture and 15 facts
Fact 1:
I absolutely love lacrosse and wish I could play every minute of everyday! Over the years since graduating, I've not been able to play until Fall '10. All I ever wanted was to be back on the turf throwing and playing around. Thankfully, God put all the pieces in place and through a ton of struggles and difficulties and coincidences/fate, I ended up at Adams State playing for Jason Lamb (the most incredible coach/man I have ever met). As I'm writing this we have one game left of the season, but we've lost all of our games up to this point. Most people would find this crushing or frustrating but I truly relish every minute I get to play and I love each game no matter what the score. I'm thankful each day that I had to go through some rough patches to be able to truly appreciate what I've been given.

Fact 2:
I drive a tiny little stick shift car and I love it to death. I never want to own an automatic again in my life.

Fact 3:
My friends consistently rank as my highest priority (behind lax). I would easily take a bullet for any of my closest friends and my life revolves around them and their happiness. I don't know if I could ever survive without the extremely close relationships I have made over the years no matter how fleeting or long lasting they were/are.

Fact 4:
I am extremely afraid of pressure. Not emotional pressure like having to get good grades or playing well, but physical pressure. For example, in high school people would take empty water bottles and swish them up super tight and use the pressure inside to launch the cap off across the room. Watching people do this makes me cringe and writhe in my skin. I hate when people do things like that... especially with balloons and things that can/will explode. I don't know why this is.

Fact 5:
I'm extremely lazy when it comes to things I don't care about. I will work my ass off in the weight room, on the field and in classes that interest me, but when it comes to things like laundry, cooking, cleaning, uninteresting homework, meetings, etc. barely anything can make me stoked or motivated to do it. That said, I know my responsibilities and get my crap done when urgent/last minute.

Fact 6:
I want to be a social worker or high school counselor. All I've ever wanted out of a career is something that I love and am talented/gifted at. I used to want to be a genetic engineer because I'm absolutely enthralled by biology and genetics in general. I think there is so much proof of intelligent design when you get into the nitty-gritty of biology and I could talk about tRNA, DNA, mRNA, and all that junk for days. The issue is that I would never be able to love my work. I could never survive cooped up in a lab with social awkward bio nerds like myself no matter how much I was getting paid. The thing that draws me to sociology is the fact that I thrive off relationships (see Fact 4) and I love interacting with other humans. It just so happens I'm kinda good at helping people and I've certainly been gifted with compassion and empathy. I don't care that I'll have to live on Ramen for the next 50 years because I won't get paid anything, as long as I'm happy and making others happy, I'll find a way to deal.

Fact 7:
I love tattoos. On me, on guys, on friends, on strangers, on anyone! I love seeing the things that people find important and meaningful enough to place in public forever. It's almost like seeing a quick snapshot of that person's life. People don't just put random things on their skin for life (okay, some do but they don't count). Tattoos are like a permanent name tag or label and I am so drawn in by how people define themselves and what's important to them.

Fact 8:
I have a little brother named Keaton who is currently 14. He looks like Justin Beiber and is a huge jock. He wrestles, plays football and merks at lax. I'm going to have to bat the ladies off with a bat very soon.

Fact 9:
I love New Orleans and want to go back so badly this summer. I can't though and it's really hard to accept. Oh well. I don't want to say much about it right now because it would take days to explain the extreme connection between myself and that city. I feel like there is some sort of gravity between my heart and the heart of the city. Some day I know I'll go back, I'm just sad I'm missing the opportunity.

Fact 10:
I love Kurt Vonnegut books and am about halfway done with his works. My favorites thus far are Cat's Cradle, Mother Night, Slapstick, and God Bless You, Dr. Kevorkian. Each has it's own things to offer and I realize Kurt isn't for everyone. He's an exceptional author and I find his mindset and outlook endearingly depressive and pessimistic. He also dabbled in art near the end of his life. It wasn't very good. I will posses a KVJ tattoo by the end of my life. Promise.

Fact 11:
I'm obsessed with LOST. It was an amazing show and I miss it all the time. The characters are wonderfully created and shaped. The plot is intriguing and give America some credit by not assuming everyone is brain dead and needs things spelled out for them step-by-step. I also will possess a LOST tattoo by the end of my life. Promise.

Fact 12:
Music is my lifeline. I can't live without it and I know how cliche that sounds. Too bad. I love it. I love listening to it, creating it, learning about it, all aspects of music are extremely beautiful to me and I hold musical experiences close to my heart. They define my greatest and worst memories and add flavor to any day.

Fact 13:
I hate heat. I can't take things out of ovens or put them in. I hate fire and lighters are terrifying. It's a miracle I can straighten my hair. I don't know why this is either.

Fact 14:
I will be living on my own for the first time this summer and I'm beyond excited about it. I can't wait to live alone and get some good solitude.

Fact 15:
I'm a massive perfectionist and I can't stand when people don't use proper grammar, punctuation and spelling when they type. Even if it's on IM. I also hate when people use the wrong their/there/they're, than/then, and it's/its. With this said, I hate English classes as well.

Beatittudes

Blessed are the poor
For theirs is the kingdom

Blessed are those who mourn
For they will be comforted

And blessed are the meek
For they will inherit the earth

And blessed are those who hunger and thirst
For they will be filled

Blessed are the merciful
For they will be shown mercy

Blessed are the pure in heart
For they will see God Almighty

And blessed are the peacemakers
For they will be called His children

And blessed are the persecuted
For they will inherit the Kingdom of Heaven

The lyrics of Shawn McDonald's song "Hallelujah" are a direct echo of Jesus' words during his Sermon on the Mount. I love it. I think these verses perfectly encapsulate the core of Christianity. I think that's exactly what Jesus was looking to do. To tell people that they don't need to clamor for Earth's so called "riches" when it means they will lose their soul, integrity, and eventually their life. I think the other great thing about it is it shows that we don't need to improve ourselves to be blessed. We dont need to drive the best car, wear the best clothes, have the biggest house, be the highest in power, know the important people or anything like that. We just need to come as we are.

The next big thing that's been on my mind is what it would look like the honestly live that that. To give away all possesions, to mourn for the things that hurt, to endure hardship brought on by others with patience and without resentment, to be hungry and thirst for righteousness (can imagine wanting righteousness as badly as you want Chipotle after a long day?), to be compassionate to those who don't deserve it, to stay away from all things corupt, to keep peace when enraged beyond belief, to be okay with being judged and ridiculed just for being you. How incredible would your life be? I can not even imagine. What would it be like to wake up each morning and commit whole heartedly to living in such a way? Can you imagine waking up and selling all the absurd clothes that you never wear? To let it slide when people dear to you attack you with words that hurt? And to think that for those small things you are promised a kingdom, to be comforted, the whole world, to be filled, shown mercy, see God, be called a child of THE God, and to have all of Heaven at your fingertips. Sounds like a pretty sweet deal.

If only we weren't so humanly flawed......

Politics

I was asked recently if I was a Democrat or Republican. Usually this is a pretty simple question to answer but considering I've been reading "The Irresistible Revolution" it wasn't. Let me just say that the ideas presented in this book are so hippie and radical. I surprise myself while reading this book because I find the ideas so invigorating and its like Shane Claiborne's words are breathing a whole new alien life into my day. I guess the best way to describe it would be it someone discovered a new sense to accompany sight, smell, taste, touch etc. It is an idea that is entirely incomprehensible at first but if it were ever to be tangible and experience it would seem so natural and obvious.

That is what this book is like. No one would in their right mind would sell everything they own and go live with 10 other people in a house, and share all the money and possessions with no claim of anything being solely theirs. But when you hear Shane talk about time when him and his housemate threw thousands of dollars into Time Square, you can see it as a practical, feasible action.

But back to what I was saying... When asked my politic feelings I remembered something that Shane said in his book. He talked about whether your not to be loyal to your political leaders or your spiritual leader. He says that if we are to be patriotic then we are to support the war. But if we are to be Jesus-followers, then we should be standing in opposition screaming that that war is killing loads of innocent people. Many of which are our brothers and sisters in Christ, whether they are of American descent, or Arab descent (Let's remember that Iraq is in the same area that Christianity started. It is NOT an American invention).

I didn't know whether to say I don't care about politics (which would be a lie considering I felt very strongly about who I wanted to win the '08 election), whether to say I was a Democrat simply because that's how I would have voted had I been able to, or whether to say that I was Republican simply because I knew that was answer they were looking for.

In most cases I try to skirt any strict, controversial, opinion based sides when asked. I try to not show that I strongly agree with gay marriage in a legal sense. I do my best not to come right out and tell people that I would rather let women kill fetus' with the help of a doctor than let them do it themselves and potentially kill themselves. The reason for this is ultimately because I was raised in a community that was composed of people who all disagreed.

If any of you went to LP you probably remember day in History classes where the class would go to different sides of the room depending on how they felt about a certain controversial issue. This was especially prevalent in Mr. Ewig's classes, mostly during election years. I remember how I would pick the popular side as an underclassmen just so I didn't have to be ridiculed by the class, even when I thought most of them were idiots. I then remember picking the side I actually stood for as I became older and the only thing I got from that was a trampled self-esteem after leaving class since I just had 3/4 of the class dissing on me and very deeply seeded beliefs.

I suppose not wanting to state a side aloud come from a horrible habit of avoiding all conflict at ALL costs. Whether that means lying, being sneaky,or anything else I normally wouldn't do. I simply HATE fighting. And the longer I live the more I see that most fighting comes from discussions regarding politics.

So when asked where I stand on the fine line between liberal and conservative I said who I would have voted for but that I simply find many things more meaningful than sitting arguing about whether our nation can handle a black president or whether Palin has enough foreign policy experience. I simply think that we should start thinking for ourselves. Don't stand by Bush just because you registered as a Republican. If you don't agree with the war and you voted for him that's just fine. There is nothing wrong with that. If you don't like that Obama is handing out bailouts because you don't think it's gonna do anything, then don't support it just because you like everything else about him.

I suppose that goes the other way too. If you HATE Obama with a passion but totally agree with his opinion about gay rights, then give him props for it. You don't have to marry the guy, but don't hold a grudge just because McCain lost and you love him and Palin more than life itself. And if you hated Bush for everything he ever did, but agree that we needed the war in Iraq to stop terrorism in our own country, don't trash talk him at your Pro-Choice rallies.

People need to start standing up for what THEY think is right, not what a party line tells them is correct and even more importantly, if you say you are a Christian, I strongly think that you need to stand for whatever your allegiance with GOD says is right. If you truly believe that we are not to murder and that Jesus was a peace maker and if you REALLY believe that the peacemakers will be given peace then you need to stick to that, no matter how unpatriotic that makes you look. Just remember the fact the Jesus died for being unpatriotic. That was his crime. Treason. He said he was God in an empire who's citizen were forced to worship their Emperor, Caesar.

I guess the whole point of this is that we need to put our allegiances in perspective. We need to be Christ followers BEFORE we are patriots. No matter how controversial that is. Plus if you're looking to steer clear of controversy, you're in the wrong religion bud.

Worth It!

This was written in New Orleans by me at 12:30 am on January 7 of this year. It was the beginning of a great adventure. So here it is:

We're sitting in an ER waiting room. Never have oxymorons been so apparent to me. With a place that is normally dull and depressing, a poor, dying, alcoholic, old, wasted, broken, homeless man by the name of Robert Ray Spring is entertaining and lively, cheering us up, a group of 8 college kids. We're wasting our night sitting with him hoping he gets into detox before it's 3 am. We're all exhausted and sleep deprived but we wouldn’t want to be anywhere else. This is what NOLA's all about. Sitting in horrible conditions all out of pure untainted love for the people here. It doesn’t matter what they've done or where they've been. Its all about where we can help them go. If it’s a better place than they're going to right now, then is SO worth it. As long as the end destination is even a fraction of an inch different from before, its worth it. Worth sacrificing sleep, worth spending countless hours in uncomfortable chairs, sitting on cold cement, getting soaked with rain, smelling awful, being broke from giving too much, getting sick from shaking too many hands, missing meals from spending too much time on the streets. Its all what we live for! Its so worth every missed materialistic moment is worth a second of a changed life. WORTH IT!

1.02.2009

I Think You Should Hear This:

In light of the fact that I leave for New Orleans for my 5th trip in about 30 hours I thought it would be appropriate to write a new blog. This is both in preparation for the trip and in reflection of the recently deceased year of 2008.

2008 brought lots of changes and new decisions to be made. It started with a NOLA trip. One that started full of fear and apprehension and ended in a new found confidence, outlook and certainty about life. I was the only student on the trip who was not legally considered an adult yet and only one of two students who had not yet received their diploma from High School. I want to just straight up thank Brooke Howard for being there with me as the only non-college kid on the trip. You really were great to talk to and unload my apprehensions on. Despite these obvious drawbacks I quickly learned the ropes and learned to fit in fine with my older cohorts. I was constantly reminded of the verses that say things about how you must be like children, except this time I didn’t feel like I need to BECOME the child… I felt I WAS the child. The trip completely threw me for a loop and I was quickly thrown into another world I had never seen before. I felt I had become part of the nomadic homeless that roved the River walk of the French Quarter. The trip ended too quickly but the effects, thankfully, did not.

Soon after, a boy was thrown into my life as well. In short, he changed everything. I was experiencing new things, mindsets, and views all the time with him. He accompanied through the last semester of high school which flew by quite quickly. Unfortunately, I was not speedy enough to keep up with it. I failed the semester miserably, having to go in the day before graduation to plead and beg for a pleading Calculus grade. (Thankfully I was successful, and had been accepted to college already) We won’t talk about my GPA for the mentioned semester.

With graduation out of the way and a new NOLA trip, I realized how ridiculous my life had become. How many compromises I’d made. How complacent I had become. Needless to say it was time for some changes and some big ones at that. NOLA was a blast! Ron asked me to give me a speech about charity and I personally thought it was a great experience. I had never presented my own ideas about a subject, let alone one of such weight, to more than a group of 5 or so friends. Let’s not get into the fact that this speech was to be given to a group of 90+ high-schoolers, half of which I did not know. I was also put in a position where I was responsible of the lives of at least 3 other people who were usually younger than me. I chose to lead them into some sketch situations to say the least. Chilling with drunk, drugged out, belligerent, and/or mentally disable homeless men is probably not what these kids parents had in mind when they sent their children off for a week of spiritual enlightenment in the beautiful city of New Orleans. And I'm sure the idea of ME of all people being in charge of their safety might concern at least one parent in the town of Monument, but in my defense, as far as I know, no one was ever hurt under my supervision. During the trip one thing became evident. Life had to change. The next epiphany that came was one that the male in my life was not going to help that cause and would likely do more hindering. Thanks goes out to Holly Mikulas for the chit- chat we had on that statue in Lafayette Square one afternoon while we were there. The trip was over and my life was different as far as I was concerned. Soon thereafter my boy was gone and it was the right choice.

College snuck up on me and I walked down the blue halls of my new dorm with tentativeness about each new roommate. Let’s just say I was dead wrong about every one of them. Each held a new view of life that my narrow view of life growing up in Monument had never seen. Living with them has been a thrill to say the least! Emily Miller-Dawson is hands down the best living mate I could have been given and I'm so thankful I left things up to chance. Things seem to go better that way. More evidence that my plans for my life basically suck and I should just leave them up to the person in charge. Nicole Bozas is by far the peace maker and helps keep us all cool headed and objective. Samiat Agunbiade (yes, I spelled that without looking it up) makes life and adventure and definitely the humor of the group. The neighbors, Kate Pogonyi and Kayla Buchanan, are great. They are almost always in a great mood (when they aren’t fighting with each other… love you guys) and we have secret codes that we knock to each other through the wall at ridiculous hours of the night.

I’d say that’s a great start to a new year in a new city at a new school with new people. But along with all those changes and new things came more new things. I’m not going to sit here and pretend that college life hasn’t affected me because that would be a lie. I’m not going to act like in the perfect kid that every parent brags about at church and shows up all their friends’ kids who are party mongers. I’ll be straight up and tell you that I became that typical college kid. Now if you’re sitting her reading this and you live in Denver like me, then none of this is a shocker to you. To those in Monument and I’m sure my mom, because I can guarantee she is reading this, this may be a shock to you, especially those of you in the Roots/FRCC circle. But I really don’t see why it is, no one’s perfect as much as I’d like to be. Although most of you may to shocked to hear stories of Halloween and my 18th Birthday where alcohol was the main attraction and most of those two night were a massive blur of strangers I didn’t know and me and Emily’s famous “Alcohol Water”, its nowhere near as bad as the two weeks I committed to smoking pot almost every night with friends much to Emily’s disappointment (I’m still sorry about that, Em). Those two weeks are a blur that could be compiled into one short day in my memory which includes taking an IQ test, sneaking into a Hookah Bar underage, Goodtimes’ custard, and Lucy. We won’t get started about when I started smoking and soon thereafter quit because it’s disgusting/stupid not to mention the issue of the scent it leaves behind (very hard to sneak past the parents).

Now to justify this, as if it’s justifiable, it’s all done with. I came up with this ridiculous plan that was just that: ridiculous. To start the explanation we must travel to the Amish society. Track with me here real quick. When an Amish teenager turns 16, they go through a process called Rumspringa. In short they stop being Amish. They all but leave to community that they have grown up in. They go out into the world that they have never experienced. They drive cars, use electricity, do drugs, wear normal clothes, drink, party, the whole shebang. The reason they do this is basically because they are released from the rules they were raised with. They are pretty close to living as they wish. While there are drawbacks, such as the occasional teen being evicted or even completely estranged from their family during their time of their transgressions, they are ultimately left to decide whether or not they will join the Amish church for life or leave it for life. Most return to their home after running amuck. Now, let me clarify that this semester of ridiculous behavior on my part was not in any way me abandoning my faith nor were the actions fueled by me flirting with become anything other than Christian. I already have made the decision to be a Christian and fully and completely believe that there is a God out there who loves me more completely than anyone here on Earth could. I also solemnly believe that this guy named Jesus died so I could be free for eternity.

These actions were motivated by the fact that I had seen so many people in high school and elsewhere that said they were Christians but were simply complacent about it. Now understand that I am in no way saying that these people weren’t Christian or were not living right, that’s not up to me. They had no problem saying one thing and doing another, discovering the same thing I did and taking it completely differently. I became devout, going to church every Sunday, the Vine every Wednesday, Roots every Thursday and occasionally theMILL on Fridays. I hung with a primarily Christian crowd and never dabbled in the other sects at school. The other people I saw would say they were Christians if you asked them but didn’t be bound by the same rules I was. Now I’ve never had a problem with the rules I signed up for. I’m actually pretty happy about them. It’s easier to do something because an omniscient power tells you so rather than a mom or a DARE speaker or even yourself. I wanted to see if it really was as easy as they made it seem. And simply put, it’s not at all easy for me to do. It drove me nuts having that nagging feeling in the back of my head perpetually. It was way worse than when you accidentally tell a secret or lie to your best friend. This was constant regret which I personally can’t live with. But sadly enough it did start to get easier as time passed. Basically the decision has been made that it’s time to back to how it was before. I'm down with going back to the days when 15 of us would show up at Chipotle after church and someone would say “Let’s go there are too many effing churches in here”.

I understand that puts me under public scrutiny if I mess up along the way or if I slip up. I'm okay with that. I deserve it. People should pay for hypocrisy and I’ll do my best not to be a hypocrite. I’m obviously going to get flack for this. I don’t know too many Christians who would go out on the Internet, where literally BILLIONS of people can see your thoughts, and say that they broke all the rules. That’s basically asking to be judged. And if you do judge, which I think is completely justified, please just me as an individual and don’t judge all Christians. I don’t need the guilt of ruining Christian’s global image on my shoulders as well as my own image, which I'm obviously not too torn up about either. I fully understand that even though I am moved out of my home my parents are still going to ground me for months and will probably not believe a single word I’ve said although I’ve tried my best to never flat out lie to them, just mask the truth which is just as bad. So bring on the pain because its 2009 now and it’s a clean slate for me in more than one respect. All that crap is officially in the past. It could be a decade ago to me. Time to move on and move forward. I want to apologize to all the people I have hurt directly and indirectly from my actions. I understand relationships may be ruined because of this but I pray that these people will extend a gracious hand and give me a clean slate as well. I want to thank the people who sat by and watched this and did their best to help. Katherine Shimel, Melanie Schow, Emily, all of you were just great. I especially want to thank Mel for putting up with me on my birthday on the phone (for hours I hear) it was an eye opener and the recent events that have occurred that you have been sworn to secrecy about (you should know what I'm talking about) are now public knowledge so tell whomever you please. The last thanks goes to Chad Peterson. That crazy even was the most ridiculous and will make a great story for the grand kids… ha it still makes me laugh. Chad, you opened my eyes that night/morning ;)

p.s. I apologize for the length of this and comment you for your perseverance! Thanks for listening. I fell a lot better now.

Gideon's

so today on campus there were these guys handing out NKJV's on campus. normally stuff like this wouldn't really bother me but for some reason i was so irritated by it.

why?

it's not like they are shoving something down my throat or selling ridiculous ideas under the same religion as me. they weren't waving signs that said "homo sex is Sin!" or anything like that. they were just handing out New Testaments.
i think part of it was the fact that i was offered 6 Bibles in 30 minutes. maybe its because i felt like more of a number than like a person. i'm not trying to say that the motive behind their actions wasn't sound. i think college is a ground that is festering with a mess of ideas and I really honestly think that it's a place that, world-view-wise, can change the way you see the world and Live the rest of your life. so obviously i think that it's wise to get the Christian View out there but for some reason this didn't feel right.

i finally decided to talk to the last guy before my destination. I stopped, saying "good morning." without even offering a supporting salutation, he said "do you want One?" and i just said no, with out even thinking if i really did need a 15th copy of the Bible. i was just annoyed at being offered so many already. let me also mention that with the exception of one guy, they were all males, at least 55 and they all looked like they flew in from texas that morning...bola tie and everything. i asked how his day was going... giving him the chance to make a connection.

i was internally hoping and wishing he would seize the opportunity to make a Connection and Abolish my preconceived Notions about him and his organization. he didn't Redeem himself. he started talking about how Campus Crusades for Christ signed them onto campus last year and they gave out almost 5,000 Bibles (another number...yuck) but they wouldn't sign for them this year (i wonder why?). he said the issue they had was that most people were offered too many Bibles. then this was the line that killed me:

"we started to notice that if we asked one or two times they just walk by but some times if they got asked by like 4 or 5 people they finally just Took one to Shut us up."

normally that would be okay but he Laughed like it was a good thing. He really did crack up like it was the funniest Joke he'd ever heard. is that really what Christians have become? are we really to the point where we Bug people 'til they Submit just to get us to leave them off their back? if that's what it's come to then i'm really not Okay with that.

why do we have to push people to meet some imaginary number Quota? who
started this Craziness? who decided that we have to constantly Compare ourselves to worldly standards like Numbers to prove to ourselves or others that we are good enough Christians? it's ridiculous! who cares if the works you do are great if your heart is no where in the right place? don't you think the God who created us in His image, His image of Love, would rather see us do one Little thing in Love than try and Convert a whole campus through force? even if hundreds of people were "saved" today while Thousands were annoyed, or offended or angered, is that really better than one person being nudged in the right direction all in the name of Loving people? i don't know if this is the right way of thinking so don't take what i say as an ultimate Truth.

it just makes me think. recently, while watching politics and listening to every one's Opinions, i've started to Sympathize with everyone who has a deep seeded Hatred of Christians... i really am starting to almost think that way. one person i know does not like Religion of any sort it seems. they say they subscribe to a certain Religion (the variety of which is immaterial at the moment) but they do nothing for it... they don't follow the "Rules" and i have started to notice that around me they point out all sorts of Messed up things that Christians have done. whether it be political or something a friend encountered. i'm almost starting to feel like they are trying to show me that i Contribute to a really Screwed up group in our Society. now usually i would stand my ground and say no, Christians aren't Messed up, we do lots of Good... look at africa or nola... we are Changing to world! But recently i've just sat there and said things like "that's so Messed up." or "that really pisses me off."

i'm not at all denouncing my Faith. my Faith in the one Person who is all about Love, every Minute of every Day to every One in a way that is so much more Perfect than i can even imagine, has Saved my Life in numerous ways and i would Hope that i can watch it Change my heart and how i Live which will ripple out and Touch the Lives of the people i live with and around. me being Christian is one of the few things that makes sense in this Crazy Life that i Live. i'm Not Perfect and i know that and i will never claim to be Better than anyone because i believe something different than them. i am not better...i'm just Different and my Life therefore is Different and the way i Experience life is also Different.

i'm guess i'm just starting to lose Faith in my fellow Christians. i've always seen my Faith as a little different than Mainstream. mostly because this Man named Zack Weingartner showed me a Radical new way to look at Jesus outside of boring churches focused more on their Rituals and social Standing that the stuff they are Preaching. he showed me a whole new way to see Religion which is so much different than this Diluted focus on the family/new life approach to it. i'm not your Typical Christian at all. i am pro-Choice, believe that You should be able to marry who you want, think that God is Amazing enough to have created our universe and us just as described in the big bang theory and evolution. i'm Anything but your conservative, Yuppie holier than thou Christian.

because i recognize these Differences between me and Mainstream stuff like this usually slides off and i just think to myself "they just don't get Iit yet...but they Will." this time, it wasn't like that. the whole Conversation with this gideon's guy actually made me Upset. i couldn't let it Go like i can with the people who Yell through bull horns about Repentance on street corners.

mr. bola tie then told me about how they Expected to hand out at least 5,000 Bibles today and they really wanted to do Better than they did last year. i have no idea if they met their Goal but i know they were Gone 4 hours later when my room mate went to class. i don't know why it made me so Mad but something about it made me really Aggravated.

maybe it's not an Issue but that's my soap box for the day... hope no one was Offended.

Walk in Love!
